The Rainbow Bridge links Niagara Falls, Ontario and Niagara Falls, New York just downstream from the American Falls. You can cross it by car, on foot or by bike, 24 hours a day — and walking across is a fun way to see both sides of the Falls in one day. Here’s how it works.

What Documents Do You Need?
You are crossing an international border, and you’ll clear customs on the other side.
- Canadian and U.S. citizens: a valid passport, passport card, NEXUS card, or enhanced driver’s licence.
- Everyone else: a valid passport plus any visa or travel authorisation required for the country you’re entering. Rules change and depend on nationality — check official government sources before your trip.
- Children: bring proof of citizenship; if travelling without both parents, carry a signed consent letter.
Tip: Rental cars — confirm your rental company allows cross-border travel before you go.

Tolls are subject to change; cards and cash are generally accepted. Cyclists must ride on the roadway, not the sidewalk.
Walking Across: Step by Step
- Walk to the bottom of Clifton Hill and follow signs for the Rainbow Bridge pedestrian entrance.
- Pay the small pedestrian toll at the turnstile.
- Walk across — stop midway for great views of the American and Horseshoe Falls (and the invisible border line!).
- Clear U.S. Customs and Border Protection at the other end. Have documents ready; answer questions simply.
- Explore Niagara Falls State Park: Prospect Point, Goat Island and the Cave of the Winds.
- Walk back and clear Canadian customs (CBSA) on return.
Allow 30–60 minutes for the crossing on busy summer weekends, much less on weekday mornings.
Driving Across
- Wait times vary a lot — summer weekends and holidays can mean long lines. Check live border wait times before you leave.
- If the Rainbow Bridge is busy, the Whirlpool Bridge (NEXUS-only) and the Lewiston–Queenston Bridge (a few km north) are alternatives.
- Know the duty-free and declaration rules — especially for alcohol, cannabis (illegal to take across the border in either direction), fresh food and firearms.
Is It Worth Crossing?
If you have documents and a few spare hours, yes — seeing the American Falls from Prospect Point and walking around Goat Island adds a lot to a trip.
