Journey Behind the Falls is one of Niagara Falls’ signature Niagara Parks experiences — a set of tunnels carved into the rock behind the Horseshoe Falls that puts you directly beneath 168,000 cubic feet of water per second. Here’s everything you need to know before you book.
What Is Journey Behind the Falls?
Journey Behind the Falls (JBTF) is a Niagara Parks Commission attraction at Table Rock Centre, directly beside the Horseshoe Falls. You take an elevator 38 metres down through the bedrock, then walk through 635 metres of tunnels to two separate observation portals positioned behind and beside the falling water. The noise and vibration are extraordinary up close.
Tickets & Cost
- Adult tickets (13+): ~$24 CAD
- Children (6–12): ~$16 CAD
- Children under 6: Free
- Niagara Parks Adventure Pass (recommended): ~$58 CAD adult — includes JBTF + Niagara City Cruises + White Water Walk + more
Value Tip: The Niagara Parks Adventure Pass saves ~$20 vs buying JBTF and the boat tour separately. If you’re doing both in the same day, buy the pass.
What to Expect Inside
The experience starts with a short video introduction, then the elevator descent. The tunnel walk takes 20–30 minutes at a relaxed pace. You’ll reach the two outdoor observation decks where you stand directly behind the curtain of falling water — the visibility is spectacular in summer, dramatic and misty in winter. A yellow poncho is provided (and strongly recommended).
How Long Does It Take?
Allow 45 minutes to 1 hour in total, including the video intro, elevator, tunnels, and time on the observation decks. In peak summer, add 20–30 minutes for queueing if you haven’t pre-booked timed entry online.
Is Journey Behind the Falls Worth the Money?
Yes — for most visitors. The up-close immersion in the Falls is genuinely different from any above-ground viewpoint. Standing on the deck with the water thundering down a metre in front of you is a powerful experience. It’s also sheltered, which makes it a great option in rain or on hot days.
It’s less worth it if: you’ve already done it before, you’re very tight on budget and need to choose just one attraction (in which case, the boat tour wins for sheer spectacle), or you’re with very young children who may find the noise and dark tunnels frightening.
Best Time to Visit
Morning visits (opening at 9am) have the shortest queues. The attraction runs year-round, but in winter the upper observation deck may be closed due to ice. Winter visits have a unique, raw atmosphere — the frozen mist and ice formations are stunning.
Tips for Visiting Journey Behind the Falls
- Pre-book timed entry online at niagaraparks.com — saves queuing time in summer.
- Wear shoes that can get wet — the decks get misted heavily.
- Put your phone in a ziplock bag — the waterproof poncho doesn’t cover your hands.
- Combine with White Water Walk for a full Niagara Parks tunnel + gorge day.
- The Adventure Pass is worth it if you’re also doing the boat tour.
